PM-designate Orban: Currently there is no risk regarding payment of pensions and salaries

Prime Minister-designate Ludovic Orban stated on Tuesday that presently there is “no risk” regarding the payment of pensions and wages and mentioned that the Liberal government is preparing an ample review of the legislation regarding the pension system, so that it becomes “sustainable, in the medium and long term”.

“We await the CCR [Constitutional Court of Romania] decision. Regardless of the Constitutional Court decision, we will implement our objective to ensure the calculation of the pension using the basic principle of contributiveness, obviously, with the exception of the pensions of the military. This was our political decision. The context in which the draft law was adopted by colleagues of mine in Parliament was a context of such a nature that it raised all discussions and later attacks at the CCR. We prepared a team that conducts an ample study regarding the pensions system in Romania, the development of the pension system in Romania, the injustices, the inequities in the system, a comparative study of the pension systems that function in other countries in the EU so that we have a very clear model and we are preparing an ample amendment of the legislation which, truly, would allow a pension system that is firstly sustainable, on the medium and long-term (…)”, said Ludovic Orban, at Gandul Live.

Asked if at this moment there is a risk in regards to the payment of pensions and salaries, Orban mentioned: “There is no risk at this time”.

“Besides, we also provided for the sums necessary for 2020 in order to support the increasing of the pensions provided by law. On the other hand, we announced publicly, we made it no secret, we are following carefully the economic development, we are watching with great attention the development of income to the state budget, to the state social security budget. Moreover, we are trying to build some realistic prognoses that take into account the international situation, so that we can make decisions that stand. We will increase pensions certainly, there is no doubt regarding this, but you can’t say 100 pct right now, for now we provided the sums necessary to increase them in agreement with the Pension Law in force,” Ludovic Orban said.
